Calculating GPA by hand takes time and invites mistakes, especially with different credit hours and grades. Students also want to know what their GPA would become with a certain grade.

This sheet calculates semester and cumulative GPA as soon as you pick the grade, supports the 5 and 4 scales, and merges your previous cumulative GPA and hours if you do not want to enter old courses.

Who is it for?

  • University and college students
  • Graduates applying for jobs or graduate studies
  • Academic advisors

What is inside the sheet?

  • Eighty courses: semester, course, hours, grade from a list
  • Grade points for the chosen scale
  • A table for twelve semesters: hours, points and GPA
  • Cumulative GPA and overall rating
  • An editable points table for your university rules

How to use it

  1. Pick the GPA scale: out of 5 or out of 4.
  2. Type the semester names in the semesters table.
  3. For each course pick the semester, enter the hours and pick the grade.
  4. Enter your previous GPA and hours if any.

Formulas used

  • Course points = grade points × course hours
  • Semester GPA = semester points ÷ semester hours
  • Cumulative = (sheet points + previous GPA × previous hours) ÷ (sheet hours + previous hours)

Worked example from the sheet itself

A student with three semesters and 45 hours on the 5-point scale:

  • Semester one GPA is 4.58, semester two 4.28, and the cumulative GPA is 4.45, rated very good.
  • Switching to the 4-point scale gives a cumulative 3.45 with the same rating.

Tips for best results

  • Try expected grades for current courses to see their effect on your cumulative GPA.
  • Check the points table in your university rules and edit it if different.
  • Do not include transferred or withdrawn courses.
